March Madness means office pools, sneaking peeks at the scores at work (if not the games themselves), and taking in the action at sports bars. So, put on your favorite team's gear and get ready to chow down on burgers and Buffalo wings at one of these top 10 sports bars across the country. One of them features a top chef's take on a gourmet Las Vegas sportsbook, another has television screens in the bathrooms so you won't miss a moment of the action, while a third will actually transport you to the game itself. Play ball!
Jake's Dilemma
430 Amsterdam Ave.
New York, NY 10024
212-580-0556

This fun-filled Upper West Side party place appeals to any mood. The front room, spacious and flanked by a long bar on one side and booths on the other, is filled with lots of diversions: foos ball, video games and the usual array of sports games flashing on multiple TVs. A regular and raucous neighborhood bunch makes Jake's ripe for chants, hollers and drinking games. And why not --- with 40 bottled beers and 15 brews on tap, there's plenty of reason to party here. But those who want something more sedate know to hit the cozy couch-crammed back room. Bookshelves stocked with ancient texts and period furniture may make you feel as if you're drinking in an old-moneyed family’s living room. Fortunately, with good nightly drink specials, whether you're old money, new money or little money, Jake's won't put you in a financial dilemma. Check out the Top 10 Value Restaurants in New York.

Bobby Valentine's Sports Gallery Cafe
225 Main St.
Stamford, CT 06901
203-348-0010

Make no mistake: this is no ordinary sports bar. It's a shrine to one of Stamford's favorite sons, owner Bobby Valentine. Born in the city, he was a star ball player in high school and is currently the manager of the Boston Red Sox. Think of this as Bobby's annuity, frequented by his local friends and fans. The place is filled with memorabilia and, of course, when a good game is on, with sports fans. With "warm ups" like the hearty chili topped with melted cheeses, chicken tenders served with hot sauce, "Hall of Fame" entrées like the full rack of barbecue ribs and a sizzling 14-ounce NY strip steak, not to mention ten "innings" of everything from salads to pizzas, sports fans will be well fed even if the game goes into overtime.

The Burger & Beer Joint
1766 Bay Rd.
Miami Beach, FL 33139
305-672-3287

The Burger & Beer Joint features 120-year-old Chicago brick walls, wood booths, copper ceilings and an outdoor patio. There are your basic bar soups, salads, sandwiches and snacks, but the Joint lives up to its name, with 99 different bottled beers and design-your-own burgers, for which diners select size (1/2 or 1 pound), bun, toppings, sauces and sides, including mushroom fries and onion rings. Menu burgers range from $11 to $32 for a ten-ounce wagyu beef burger topped with pan-seared foie gras and black truffle demi designed by executive chef Carlos Barillas (Nobu Las Vegas and Miami). There's even a gimmicky ten-pound Motherburger that's free if a single person finishes it within two hours; otherwise, $125. If you'd rather watch something more athletic than competitive eating, the dark B & B Sports Bar has eight flat-screen TVs, chalkboard walls filled with scores, a pool table and $5 beers. Find the best burgers near you.

The name itself sounds seedy, which is exactly where I expect to find the sloppiest, tastiest burgers. Despite its trashy moniker, Burger & Beer Joint is very polished,
albeit with “rebellious” details that conjure up images of wild and
tough bikers on Harleys (their logo is, after all, designed to look like
a tattoo). And the restroom is equally put-together yet edgy, with
wallpaper of practically life-size pinup girls, complete with fishnet
tights and full-coverage 1940s two-piece swimsuits, a far cry from the
bikinis you see girls trotting around in on South Beach (wallpaper by CCIO Group).
I assume the men’s room was wallpapered with the same gals — funny how
most women are totally fine with this, but most men would flip if there
were half naked men all over the walls in their bathroom. The white
counter and sinks were embedded with shards of glass in all different
colors; it was sort of as if a grownup box of crayons exploded, and I
really liked the effect. Finishing touches included slightly curved
faucet handles and thin, ultra-modern toilet flushers. And I can’t
forget the hallway leading to the restroom, lined with beer ads and
photos, including one of a group of champion burger eaters who
successfully demolished Burger & Beer Joint’s 10-pound Motherburger —
$125, or free if you can finish it.

I love fancy burgers, so Boirgereau assured me I would love Burger
& Beer Joint, and I did; their execution of fancy burgers is indeed
some of the best. I ordered an 8 oz. monster topped with provolone,
prosciutto, pineapple, bourbon barbecue sauce, tomato and a fried egg,
topped off with a brioche fun “branded” like a cow with a Burger &
Beer Joint “branding iron.” Scrumptious. I’m a burger master.

NBC - 1st Look

By: Brian Mait | Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011

Producers Maureen Giannone and Brian Mait hit the streets to take on the arduous task of scouting the country's hottest destinations for upcoming episodes of 1st Look on NBC. Here's what they found this week.

When I think of Miami, my mind tends to wander to turquoise waters, white sand beaches, and the beautiful people that line them. That is until I landed at Burger & Beer Joint in Miami Beach, FL. From now on, Miami will inspire thoughts of 10 ounces of prime angus beef, hickory smoked bacon, bourbon BBQ sauce, American cheese, sesame seed buns, duck fat fries, seasonal beers on tap, turquoise water, white sand and beautiful people... just not necessarily in that order.

In all seriousness, Burger & Beer Joint is just that, a joint that specializes in serious burgers and serious beers for serious burger and beer enthusiasts. The angus beef patties are chargrilled, juicy (not greasy) and delicious. The "Thunder Road," cooked medium rare (unless specifically ordered otherwise), coated with melted American cheese that holds crispy slices of salty smoked bacon in place and then lightly doused in BBQ sauce, is sheer perfection between a sesame seed bun.

I just love a challenge. Actually, it's fairer to say I love being the guest judge at a challenge when other people have to cook for me. Who wouldn't want that gig? I not only get a free meal (or the equivalent of three or four meals, which is most often the case), but I also have the fate of someone who knows how to cook much better than I in my hands.

So it was with great pleasure that I accepted South Florida Today's offer to serve as one of three judges for a Burger Challenge last Friday. The cook-off, which took place around 11 a.m., was held outside, and each of the four contenders was given a barbecue from The BBQ Depot in Hollywood. Chefs from Burger & Beer Joint's Brickell location, South Beach's 8 oz. Burger Bar, Coral Springs' Big Bear Brewing Company, and Georgie's Alibi from Wilton Manors wrestled with chilly, high winds that kept blowing out their precious flames while I sat back and wondered who was going to bring out my most carnal carnivorous desires. Just to make sure I wasn't going to be tricked with tofu, prunes, or any other "mysterious" or laxative-type ingredient, I walked grill to grill and confirmed yes, indeed, there was real meat to be had. My stomach was psyched.

One of the latest and greatest hot spots to hit the beach is
definitely worth checking out! The Burger & Beer Joint located at
1766 Bay Rd. is three venues in one… You’ve got the burger restaurant
downstairs that serves some VERY yummy burgers with fresh cut fries.
Plus, you’ve got a nice sports bar featuring 99 brands of beer. Then,
for the clubbers, you’ve got a non-pretentious nightclub upstairs. No
velvet ropes here! Plenty of couches and chairs to chill with or
without bottle service.

Over the last few weeks I had been talking with my compatriot, The Burger Beast,
about trying to do something together with our blogs. The perfect
opportunity came up when we heard about the opening of the Burger and
Beer Joint, where our two worlds meld into one. The Burger and Beer
Joint is located in the less touristy area of South Beach, west of Alton
Road, by the Venetian Causeway. It is located next to a cluster of
restaurants (Sardinia, Joe Allen’s, etc.) that have had some staying
power, considering the area. The Burger and Beer Joint is actually three
different venues in one. You have the Burger and Beer Joint which is
the restaurant portion and right now, the only section you can actually
order the burgers in. You then have the B&B Sports Bar which is
attached to the Burger and Beer Joint and can be accessed by going
through an internal hallway or by using the Sports Bar’s private
entrance. Located upstairs is the B&B Lounge.

It is only fitting that on South Beach, that bastion of excess where hype and indulgence are king, that one can order a 10-lb hamburger.

Known as “The Mother Burger”, the 10-lb burger is sold at the newly opened Burger and Beer Joint, a place that sometimes takes itself a little too serious for being a burger and beer joint.

For $75 (now $125), you will get 10 pounds of angus beef on a 4 pound sesame seed bun along with two toppings and two sides.

It is the epitome of gluttony. An artery clogging, jaw-stretching , belly-bloating bitch of a burger.
